- He died on the 16th October, 1877, aged 28, at Philipopolis, of fever contracted in the Shipka Pass, whilst acting as Special Correspondent for the "London Daily Telegraph" on the Turkish side. When a French priest, who was with difficulty procured, asked him if he made the sacrifice of his life to God, his last words in reply were: "My God, I am entirely Thine."
