Jim sparkes relates meeting Ron in Cairo in 1949 and Ron was in sick bay with ulcerated legs.

There is a story of Ron having a blackout and falling off his bike.  Win Sullivan went to the hospital with Betty and they saw someone being brought in.  They were struck by his very dirty feet..... it was Ron.

Coincidentally Betty and Ron, and Win (to be Ron's stepmother) and James (Ron's father) got engaged the same day and bought rings from same jewellers.
