Notes
- 1881 in Elmsted, Kent. at North Leigh.
***********
From Keith Griffiths.....
Northleigh is probably what is now called Old Leigh Place in the Northleigh area of Elmsted. This property cannot easily be found as it lies at the end of a no through road. It is a spectacular example of buildings of that era. It is not known if Northleigh (Old Leigh Place) was in fact sold by Richard Woollett's family (see Catherine Cloke b 1556).
From the Churchwardens' Accounts a John Woollett was a tenant of Thorn Farm, Northleigh in Elmsted and Scarps Field on the Elmsted/Stelling border from 1832 until 1835. The Tithe Award of 1840 confirmed this and also gave the owner as John Newport and the area as 16 acres 33 perches.
The census records for 1841 do not mention John Woollett. However they do say that William Woollett was the occupier of a property at Northleigh from 1861 when he was 38 until 1891 when he was 69. His occupation was a grazier.
************
The 1881 census gives his age as 56 which suggests a date of birth of 1825.
Only children George, Elizabeth, Fanny, Charles and Fred are with William and his wife mary on the 1881 census.
Much of the information here is from other researchers and I wonder about its accuracy.
Some checking is needed. Sarah is shown twice but I expect that she is the daughter of her mother Sarah and I wonder if her mother died in childbirth.
